Lymphoedema is a chronic condition whereby some part of the body, commonly an arm or leg / s has persistant swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The normal production of lymph and its filtration system is compromised and the body is unable to sufficiently remove excess fluid in the usual way. Lymphatic fluid is not just water but a collection of proteins which cannot simply be 'squeezed' or 'flushed out'. Any natural ability to drain must be maximised and / or alternative channels of lymph removal utilised.
Genetic disorders such as milroys disease may be the cause or surgery / radiotherapy to remove lymphnodes, possibly following treatment for cancer, can trigger lymphoedema or mean that a person is more susceptible to the condition.
